Roy Wilkins, age 86, died peacefully on January 4, 2026, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he resided with his beloved wife, Gail Wilkins. Roy and Gail shared 52 years of marriage, marked by devotion, partnership, and deep love for their family.
Born on January 16, 1939, Roy was the son of the late Harold and Lillian Wilkins and late brothers Richard Wilkins of Sherborn, MA and Robert Wilkins of Belmont, MA. Roy was raised in Belmont, Massachusetts and was a proud graduate of Belmont High School, Class of 1957. Following high school, Roy served in the Army before dedicating his professional life to public service. He worked in Belmont as a police lieutenant and EMT, roles through which he touched countless lives with his calm presence, compassion, and commitment to helping others.
Roy took great pride in teaching and mentoring people, always eager to share knowledge, stories, and practical wisdom. He was known for his patience, integrity, and willingness to lend a helping hand.
Roy is survived by his loving wife, Gail Wilkins; his children, Mark Wilkins of New Boston, NH; Lynne Wilkins of Nashua, NH; John Flynn; and Gail Saunders and her husband, Joe, of Andover, MA. He was a devoted grandfather, known as “Grampy,” to Brian, Andrew, Haley, Nicholas, and Daniel, whom he loved dearly and took immense pride in.
In his quieter moments, Roy found joy in watching Turner Classic Movies and listening to his favorite country music, especially John Denver. Above all else, he cherished time spent with his family and treasured watching his grandchildren grow up and attending their various activities and sporting events.
Roy will be remembered for his dedication to service, his love of learning, and the steady, caring presence he provided to those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the family he loved so deeply.
A graveside funeral service to honor Roy’s life will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery & Crematory, located at 185 Lake Street, Peabody, Massachusetts.
To my friend and her family. Gail I am so sorry for your loss. I have had the pleasure of knowing Roy since you first met him. I always said you were truly blessed to have him in your life. He was truly one of a kind. He was so devoted to you as you were to him. God truly blessed your lives. I know you miss him. I wish I could have said goodbye and get my usual bear hug and kiss but I will blow him a kiss in his heavenly home. I did really love him and his gentle ways. God bless you always and keep you in his care. I love you. Shelby
